Installation and First Launch

Current release status

As of 2026-08-28, Captain Who remains a private development project. It does not yet provide a public download, an enabled automatic-update channel, or a unified distribution channel. Although the repository configures platform build targets and a signed update client, this does not mean that any installer has passed formal release validation.

If you are an invited test user, use only an installer supplied directly by a team member with explicit version and verification information. Do not obtain builds from reposted links or unknown mirrors.

Installer formats

The release information supplied with an installer by its trusted distributor determines which format is actually available. The public 1.0 targets are:

A familiar file extension is not a reason to ignore operating-system warnings about signatures or provenance. The macOS GA workflow enforces Developer ID signing, Apple notarization, and stapling, but production credentials and an accepted notarization record are not currently available. Signing and release acceptance for Windows and Linux must likewise be assessed for the specific installer you receive. If the operating system blocks installation, stop and confirm the source, version, and verification value with the installer’s direct provider. Do not disable operating-system security controls.

First launch

At startup, the app loads local services, projects, model settings, drafts, and conversation records. The first launch, or the first launch after an update, may take longer. If the startup screen reports a failure, try selecting “Retry.”

After the main interface opens, configure a model:

1. Select the profile area at the bottom of the left sidebar, then select “Settings.”
2. Open “Configuration.”
3. Enter the default API URL and API Token for the model service.
4. Enable the models you need under “Available models.” If the provider uses different model identifiers, open “Manage models” to create or edit a model.
5. Return to the app, create a “New conversation,” and confirm that the model is available below the composer.

A model name appearing in the list does not prove that its endpoint is available. Captain Who can validate the URL, Token, model identifier, and server compatibility only by making a real request.

Optional configuration

• Web search: Enter a Tavily API Key under “Settings → Configuration,” then enable “Web search.”
• Permissions: Under “Settings → General,” decide whether to expose Full or Custom permissions. Keep Default permissions for your first session.
• Skills: Built-in Skills can be selected directly from the task composer. Install third-party Skills under “Settings → Skills.”
• MCP: Add, authorize, and enable local MCP Servers separately under “Settings → MCP.”

Updates and uninstallation

The app includes a signed update client, but the public stable channel is not currently enabled. While it is disabled, rely on the version and verification information supplied by the trusted distributor with the installer. Once the formal channel is enabled, you can check, download, and install an update under “Settings → About & Updates.” Before updating, allow running tasks to finish and back up important project files. After updating, verify one model connection and one project-read workflow before continuing.

Uninstalling the app does not necessarily erase all local data. To clean up content managed by the interface first, remove projects one by one, archive the remaining conversations, then permanently delete them under “Settings → Archived conversations.” There is currently no single control that erases all application data. Model configuration, credentials, and other app data may remain; do not guess at and delete files from system directories.
